Icon Variant Pro | Unboxing

I have upgraded from a standard Icon Variant to an Icon Variant Pro, and the first thing you notice when you lift it out of the box is that it looks like the same helmet but feels like a different one in your hands.

Same silhouette. Same long peak. Same shape that looks like nothing else on the road. Everything around that shape has been remade.

The Shell

The Variant Pro has a hand-laid composite shell of fiberglass, Dyneema and carbon fiber, and it is made in three shell sizes. That is the detail that matters most in practice: a smaller head gets a smaller shell instead of more foam padding inside a large one.

It is DOT and ECE certified.

It is also heavy. Around 1,600 grams is well above a pure carbon fiber racing helmet, and you feel that immediately when you pick it up.

The Interior

This is where the upgrade is most apparent. The liner is a five-piece Hydradry liner, and the crown is divided into three separate pads instead of a single piece.

That means fit can be genuinely adjusted, not just accepted. The cheek pads are fuller and the edges cleaner than on my old Variant.

Ventilation

Eight intakes, two exhausts under the spoiler, metal mesh in the chin vents and adjustable brow intakes.

The chin port is noticeably more open than on the original. You can see straight through the helmet: it simply lets in more air.

The Visor and Peak

This is the improvement that does not show up in photos, and the one that matters most.

On my old Variant, changing the visor was a genuine ordeal. Plastic covers had to be pried off, bolts unscrewed on both sides with a screwdriver or the Icon-supplied tool, and only then would the visor come free. You simply did not swap visors: you picked one and rode with it.

The Variant Pro is tool-free. Peak off, visor off, new one on. No screws, no tools.

In Short

Same helmet in appearance, a completely different helmet in execution. If you liked the original, this is the same idea, built properly.
