AGV K1 S First Impressions: My New Motorcycle Helmet

I recently switched to an AGV K1 S, and after my first rides with it, I already have a pretty good idea of what I like about it.

This isn't a long-term review yet. I haven't put thousands of kilometres on the helmet or tested it in every possible condition.

These are simply my first impressions after actually riding with it — and especially how it compares with the helmet I was using before.

Why I switched helmets

Before the K1 S, I was using a Bandit carbon helmet.

I still think it's an incredibly cool helmet. It's extremely light, looks different from almost everything else out there, and I genuinely liked using it.

But I eventually started looking for something newer.

One reason was certification. My previous helmet was built around the older ECE 22.05 standard, while the AGV K1 S is ECE 22.06 homologated.

That doesn't suddenly make my old helmet useless, but when it comes to something protecting my head, moving to a newer helmet standard felt like a sensible upgrade.

The K1 S also immediately feels like a much more substantial helmet. It's heavier, there's noticeably more padding inside, and the whole thing feels more solid when you put it on.

The first thing I noticed: stability

The biggest difference became obvious once I started riding faster.

With my previous helmet, I could feel the helmet moving and vibrating more as the speed increased. At higher speeds, the airflow would start moving my head around as well.

The K1 S feels significantly more stable.

When I'm looking straight ahead, the helmet feels planted in the airflow. If I turn my head slightly, you can really feel how the aerodynamic shape interacts with the wind.

It almost feels like the helmet wants to return your head to the centre position.

That's probably the biggest improvement I've noticed so far.

The K1 S has that very aerodynamic, almost wind-tunnel-designed AGV shape, and in my experience it isn't just there for looks.

Comfort has also been a nice surprise

The K1 S has considerably more padding than my previous helmet, so I initially thought it might feel hotter or more restrictive.

So far, it has actually been more comfortable.

It fits snugly around my head without creating uncomfortable pressure, and I've found it comfortable even during longer rides.

Obviously helmet fit is extremely personal, so someone else's experience could be completely different.

But for my head shape, the K1 S has been very comfortable so far.

The ventilation actually works

Another thing I've noticed pretty quickly is the ventilation.

The K1 S has several adjustable vents across the chin and upper part of the helmet, and there's a noticeable amount of airflow when riding.

For me, that makes quite a big difference.

Especially when you're wearing a properly padded full-face helmet, good ventilation is one of those things you don't really appreciate until you have it.

So far, the K1 S has been very good in that regard.

I also installed my Cardo

I installed a Cardo Packtalk Edge in the helmet together with the internal speakers.

That setup has worked surprisingly well.

Talking through the intercom works exactly as you'd expect, but I was actually more surprised by how decent music sounds inside the helmet.

The K1 S has worked well with the Cardo installation, and being able to talk to the people I'm riding with has already made riding more enjoyable.

And yes, I bought the silver mirror visor

The silver mirror visor might not make the helmet faster.

But it definitely makes it look better.

I went with a black K1 S combined with the silver mirrored visor, and that's basically the exact look I wanted when I started looking at AGV helmets.

Completely subjective, obviously, but I think AGV makes some of the best-looking motorcycle helmets around.

The mirror visor just finishes it off.

My first impressions

So far, I'm very happy with the AGV K1 S.

The biggest things I've noticed are:

• Much better stability at higher speeds
• A comfortable and well-padded interior
• Good airflow and ventilation
• A more substantial overall feel
• Easy integration with my Cardo system
• And, importantly, it looks really good with the mirror visor

There are still things I want to learn about it over time.

I'm interested to see how comfortable it remains after much longer rides, how the interior holds up, how noisy it feels across different bikes and speeds, and generally how it ages after a full season of use.

So consider this my first impressions, rather than the final verdict.

But based on my experience so far, switching to the AGV K1 S has felt like a very worthwhile upgrade.
